I agree with John's quote. A good example of this is the photo critique we have in our class. So many times I was impressed and surprised to listen to my classmates perspectives of a photo. Everyone notices something new and different in a photograph, which the photographer might be completely unaware of. While a painting is something where the painter paints what he wants and is aware of the minutest details.
